MAY - SUMMIT
MT. CHARLESTON, NV - 11,917 FT. SOUTH LOOP TRAIL
THE 1st OF 6 SUMMITS FOR THE YEAR
First off, we couldn’t have asked for better weather. Partly cloudy, light breeze and sunny at the summit. Mt. Charleston is the highest peak in the Spring Mountains and in Clark County, Nevada. My son Tyler and I hiked the 8+ miles and approximately 5,000 ft of elevation gain to the top. The first 4.5 miles consist of several switchbacks in the trees, keeping you pretty shaded. Once you reach the first saddle, you’re hiking in what seems like a forest graveyard, as there has been wildfire that has scorched the trees. It feels a bit like you’re walking through an eerie Tim Burton movie scene. The trail is always visible and is considered a hard hike. The Nepalese flag was unfurled on top!
