AUGUST SUMMIT - WHEELER PEAK, NV 13,063 FT.
8.52 MILES, 2867 FT. ELEV GAIN, 04:01:26 MOVING TIME
Wheeler Peak is located in Baker, NV and is part of Great Basin National Park. Taking the Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive, you make your way to the trailhead at just over 10,000 ft. The first two miles of trail are a gradual climb through the trees on well maintained single track. The last 2+ Miles abruptly climb out of the trees and onto chunky rock fields. The hiking becomes slow and steep, high stepping and navigating over very technical terrain. Pace slows significantly the last mile. I was very happy to have my trekking poles on this hike.
I had sunny weather with temperatures in the mid 60’s. Surprisingly on top there was very little wind. I shared the summit views with a few other friendly hikers and enjoyed my lunch. This was a great prep hike for my upcoming Mt. Whitney climb in October.
